View larger. | Story The story of White Knight Chronicles is set in the fictional Kingdom of Balandor and follows the adventures of a boy named Leonard who realizes his role in a drama started thousands of years in the past. Working in the proximity of the palace, Leonard stumbles on a plot to kidnap the enigmatic Princess Cisna. As he helps her escape he also becomes aware of his connection to a transformative power which allows him to take on the ancient shape, and harness the devastating power of the White Knight. Yet there are other elements at work here as well, including the forces of an evil wizard with powers that stretch back to the same ancient times which produced the White Knight. With the help of his friends and the power of the White Knight, these are the forces that Leonard will have to face in his quests. Gameplay White Knight Chronicles is a Japanese RPG (JRPG) centered around a turn-based battle system in a local single player story-driven campaign that is supported by online multiplayer functionality. Gameplay questing occurs from a third-person perspective and follows Leonard and up to three other AI companions, which can include the customizable character that players assume in multiplayer mode. Once quest members are assembled, players utilize the strengths of the overall group as a whole, and are able to switch between characters at will. Combat being turn-based, players must be able to cue up and control the actions of each character in quick sequence for each combat scenario faced. The game facilitates this via the Function Palette, located in its Battle Preparation menu, allowing players to prepare in advance a series of commands for each character to carry out. These can involve magic or weapons use and can be merged into combos. Multiple palettes can be saved, making it possible to optimize actions for specific types of enemies, and making for quick changing of commands. As with any RPG, throughout quests players accumulate experience which allows their character to level up, purchase items and abilities and generally grow stronger with an eye towards besting the increasingly challenging creatures, bosses and situations faced. Online Multiplayer Along with a compelling single player campaign, White Knight Chronicles also contains an exciting online multiplayer component. Within this, up to four players can engage in more than 50 multiplayer quests, with each player creating their own unique customizable character which can be leveled up in a combined group effort, and take advantage of created items and new skills. Although unique to the online game mode, which is designed for multiplayer action, these quests can also be played alone if players wish. In addition to this functionality available in the online multiplayer mode also includes a variety of ways to interact with the wider White Knight Chronicles community on the PlayStation 3 platform. Included in this is town building through the Georama functionality, which allows players to construct a town to their own specifications that can be populated offline with characters from throughout the single player campaign and then taken online where it serves as a base for quests hosted by players, as well as a persistent online location that other players can visit and buy items your town's population has for sale. The game also offers an online interface known as GeoNet that allows players to communicate with others via blogs, forums, quest logs and voice chat functionality, as well as post snapshots from their journeys using the Crystal Camera in-game tool. Don't pay attention to the big media reviews!

(I'm only a few hours in to the game as I type this, right after meeting the Don in Albana and unlocking the binding shops.)
IGN, GameSpot, and the other websites and magazines that gave this game crappy reviews should really pop the disc back in and give it another go! DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Honestly opinion =/= fact, and if the game appeals to you by all means pick it up, it's worth it in my opinion! The art direction is a little weird but slowly growing on me. It "looks" like a PS2 game, but honestly if you take the time to look around it is most def a PS3 game! Graphics are very crisp and clean and the animation is pretty well done too. The only problem are the lip syncs, but then that's always been a universal problem with JRPGs. Music is alright, but it does fit the theme and the mood of the scenes. Combat and character customizations are awesome and VERY in depth! But by far my favorite aspect of the game is GeoNet/GeoRama! Being able to play quests with up to four people is fun, and the community has been VERY friendly and helpful so far (besides a few bad apples on the in game message boards that got steamrolled over by everyone else!).
If I had to put it in to a few words, White Knight Chronicles is the best of Final Fantasy XII, Dark Cloud 2, Monster Hunter, and Final Fantasy XI all rolled up in to one!
Now, I must get back to my HomeTown... |
Thought the battle system was simple? Think again.

I watched the IGN and other reviews and honestly was dissapointed at the game. Those reviews made me not play it the first night that I got it from the pre-order since the expectation of the game got lower.
I just set down this weekend to play for a few hours. At first, I somewhat had to agree with the reviews so I thought that was all.. By each level up, the whole game and the battle system grew on me. More combos and stats that I worked with, the more I appreciated the depth of this game.
By anymeans, this is no action RPG, this is basically a Turn based RPG with a freedom of movements in the battle. I find this a great combination that's similar to FF12. If you want to have a good battle, you need to understand your each skills and combos and what monster you're fighting. But is there a reward for this effort?
IGN mentioned that this game was way too easy. I kind of know what they mean in the story mode, but it is not the easiest game doing online quest. Yes, it is going to be easy if you go on a lvl.15 quest when you're lvl.30. But I recommend you doing those quests when you've hit that lvl, and it is not easy playing it alone without a party.
Out of all the bad points that IGN has mentioned which I disagree with all of them to a certain point, I'm going to strongly disagree with one of them. And that's the waiting time in the battle that newbie rpg reviewer mentioned. I challenge them to say the same statement for Bow attacks with a Light armor or clothing set. Since the wait time for an action heavly depend on what you're attacking with and what armor you're wearing, bow attacks are really fast and so are dagger types. I use 2h large sword...it is slow, but isn't that really necessary for any RPGs??? the balance? If you want to attack faster with the 2h sword, you can be naked and attack, it's fast, IGN does not point this out at all... Misleading us to think that the game is full of wasting time. In fact, I even switch to my Bow/white magic character while my 2h sword wait time to cast some buff on me then I switch back. The only thing that I dislike is the AI, your companions are really dumb when in battle... Except the healing part, but I can deal with this by switching back and forth when necessary.
I really can't explain all here, but I give this game a 5/5 for its class(rpg) on ps3 platform. It is as fun as demon's souls with a buddy or two. Let's face it, Americans are spoiled with fast paced games and no preparation for the battle, Japanese aren't. This game is not for everyone, I strongly recommend all the Monster hunter, FF11 gamers to try this game. The more you play, the more you really understand the depth of the game and I see a great potential of the toughest online quest to release... just when I am ready for it. |
