Of all the original IPs that Square Enix created during their glory days on the PlayStation 2, none can compare to the greatness that is the Kingdom Hearts series. When the idea for the series was first announced, many passed it off as a crossover that would never work. Little did they know it would become one of the company’s most popular franchises ever. The next ‘official’ entry in the series, KH: Birth by Sleep which is actually a prequel to the first game and will (hopefully) explain some of the convoluted storyline of the series. Square Enix isn’t pulling any punches as have recently revealed that KH:BBS will be getting a Special Edition, but it looks like our European mates have the upper hand this time. For those of you diehard European Kingdom Hearts fans who are willing to shell out a few more dollars (or pounds in this case), you will be receiving the game, a special edition case, a 48-page ” The Art of Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep” artbook AND exclusive BBS art prints. Not too shabby, eh? Also, I think we can all imagine there will be some crazy ‘after the credits’ video teasing you about the NEXT Kingdom Hearts game that probably won’t hit until the PlayStation 4, knowing SE’s track record. Ugh. If this is announced for the US, we shall let you know. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep arrives exclusively on the PSP (Square Enix WON’T release a digital copy for the PSP go for some reason) on September 7th in the US and September 9th in EU. Make sure you read PlayStation LifeStyle’s review when it hits to discover if it’s another Triple A Kingdom Hearts title or another ‘Princess and the Frog’. [ Source ]

Final Fantasy XI might be near a decade old, but that doesn’t stop playing from enjoying the vast world of Vana’diel. With Final Fantasy XIV, another MMO by Square Enix, nearing launch, many fans of the online classic are wondering if their time is winding down. During an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka at Square Enix, Tanaka shared his thoughts on the longevity of the company’s first entry into the MMO market. When asked about whether or note Square Enix imagined FFXI lasting as long as it has, Tanaka replied : “Usually the next generation of consoles will come in five years, so [at that time] we thought, “We will continue at least five years, up until towards the end of the PlayStation 2 generation.” But to be honest, we’re quite surprised that even the PS3 is out now and we’re still continuing…” In direct response to the future operation of FFXI, Tanak said: “However, of course, we will continue working on FFXI. Even after we launch FFXIV, we will still continue the development side. So, as long as the players enjoy the game, we will continue the service.” Final Fantasy XI launched in May 16, 2002 and has enjoyed a steady subscription of hundreds of thousands of players across the globe. The upcoming Square Enix title Final Fantasy XIV looks to expand on what FFXI did both in terms of presentational and gameplay evolution, and with launch only two short months away, the hype for one of the biggest MMO launches in recent years is growing by the day. However, those that enjoy FFXI for what it is will be supported by Square Enix as long as they enjoy the title and keep playing. Does this mean Square-Enix will be supporting FFXIV until 2020? Let’s hope so!

The great news just keep coming from Comic-Con this year and this time its Sony Online Entertainment jumping in with a release date for the highly anticipated DC Universe Online. That’s right, grab your hero or villain boots and get ready to step into the world of DC Comics this November the 2nd for PS3 and PC. Along with this great news is also a brand spanking new trailer showing off some backstory in the game and one hell of a battle between super hero’s and villains.

Recently, posters for what we thought was the next Hitman surfaced on the website of Great Graphics Inc, a design developer that’s worked with the team at Io Interactive in the past. IO was quick to debunk those rumors. The posters have since been removed. Now, Eurogamer is claiming to have received word from an unnamed source that Hitman 5 will be releaed “at the very earliest Christmas next year”. Backing up their claim is retailer is UK-retailer Play , who is listing Hitman 5 for a release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on November 28, 2011. The logo spotted on the placeholder art resembles that of the debunked poster art, as well. Square Enix’s statement to Eurogamer? “It’s flattering to see so many fans are eager for another Hitman game. Unfortunately we have nothing to announce at this time.”

During a recent Sony Seasonal Preview event, Sal and I were able to get a hands-on with Time Crisis: Razing Storm , Namco Bandai’s next in the arcade franchise slated for a September release on PlayStation 3. The portion we played consisted of the first level of the Razing Storm arcade mode. We played the game with two Move controllers, though the game does support both DualShock 3 and Guncon controllers, as well. The arcade level we played was fast paced – faster than Time Crisis has ever been before. You’re still on-the-rails, but your primary weapon is an automatic with infinite ammo. The first thing I noticed was that the Move controller was precise – extremely precise – and it was just the precision we needed to take out our first group of enemies. Enemies come in the plentiful in Razing Storm , mainly because you have an automatic weapon at most times. That precision is key for taking out either one at a time quickly, or sweeping your controller through their entire line back and forth. The precision should be expected for a Time Crisis title, but it was just really nice to see the new technology working so flawlessly. As for the arcade mode itself, like mentioned above, it’s fast. Groups of about five to eight enemies will swarm you at a time, forcing you to dispatch them quickly. On the Move controller, you hold down one button to stay behind your shield and release it for the ability to shoot. Enemies will hit you if you’re not careful, indicated by a marker on the enemy himself that warns he’s about to fire at you. The marker is either red or blue, depending on who he’s about to attack, and with quick reflexes, ducking back behind your shield will save you. After every several groups, you’ll quickly be scored on how many enemies you killed, and how much damage you received. It quickly awards several stars to each player. It gave Sal and I a competitive edge as well as a cooperative experience. Fortunately for me, Sal lost most of the time. ( Editor’s Note: Someone’s not coming to the next event… *wink*) Though your main weapon is an automatic, at certain instances the game will give you a different weapon to use for a short time – either for more waves of enemies, special enemies, or for a boss. At the end of the arcade mode, we contended with a giant robot strapped with machine guns and rockets on its several arms. To be honest, I couldn’t really make out if it was a robot or a type of jet. I was too concerned with dodging behind my shield and shooting our new rocket launchers at it. Even though they give you new weapons, all of the weapons will have infinite ammo. The game is designed to be fast paced and extremely more intense. At the end of the boss fight, Sal and I were scored on the entire mission, where it adds up all of the stars you collected through that particular level. The game felt great, and take in mind I’m not generally an advocate for the Time Crisis series, but this may be a title I have to pick up. That’s true especially because of the four different single player modes (arcade mode, sentry mode, story mode, and an online battle mode – story and online modes are an off-rails FPS) and the additional Time Crisis 4 and Deadstorm Pirates inclusions. It’s three games in one, practically. The arcade modes are set to be about two-three hours long, with the story mode to be about five to six hours. All with multiplayer deathmatch and the likes included as well. The game looks like it’s going to be a surefire way to jump start my Move game collection.
